I’ve personally experienced the quality of “education” given to children in Michigan, one in Dearborn and one in Plymouth/ Canton – supposedly “Centers of Excellence” for education in Michigan. They both achieved a GPA of over 3.5 (on a 4 point scale) and graduated in the top third of their classes.
In both cases, the person involved matriculated to a nationally recognized University. Both started by seeking Engineering degrees. Both failed catastrophically for two reasons:
1. They were NEVER TAUGHT HOW TO STUDY during the course of their Michigan “education”.
2. Their “education” in English, Math, and Science was totally inadequate compared to their peers in the Universities they chose to attend.
So, one can understand my disgust when I see in this article the following:
An analysis of a hypothetical Saline teacher’s career salary track was done by Michael Van Beek, director of education policy at the Mackinac Center for Public Policy.
A Saline Public Schools teacher that was hired in 2009 would start with a salary of $40,425 and see it rise to $111,750 in the 15th year, an increase of 178 percent.
"This is a typical method for compensating teachers," Van Beek said. "The percentages will change, the step increases will change, but the way it accumulates is the same for most every school district in the country."
THIS IS APPALING!
I realize that the Michigan “Education” Association “teachers” union has publically stated:
“We don’t give a damn about the kids. All we care about is getting more and better benefits.”
But, this situation in the schools has reached the point of INSANITY.
When are the residents and taxpayers of Michigan going to DEMAND accountability from their school systems and those who are laughingly referred to as “teachers”? When are the residents and taxpayers of Michigan going to COMPEL the school boards, unions and legislators to care about the children, rather than just care about fattening their own bank accounts?
